I finally did it! I went back to school and completed a program to obtain my teaching license! I'm so excited. I decided it was time to start sharing my joy! So here is my new blog. It's more of a journal really...my thoughts and ideas, anxieties and sighs of relief, and discoveries. This is more for me as I seek to become transformed by the one thing that gives me the greatest sense of pure joy beyond anything I have ever experienced.
I am currently waiting for two things...results from a test (coming on July 11) and my actual teaching license. The application has been submitted, and I am now searching for a job. I only need one job so it doesn't matter that there are only a few positions open right now. I am going to sub until the full-time position designed just for me opens up. And I am going to start actively sending out a packet to all the schools I'm interested in with my documentation...as soon as those two final pieces come in.
Here's my background story...
I started out in mortgage banking. No degree at that time. When the market crashed in the 90's I transitioned into administrative roles. I married my high school sweetheart (who is still my sweetheart!), had 2 beautiful children. Eventually, I began working in marketing as an admin. Then, I went back to school and got my undergraduate degree. Soon after, I moved into higher positions - marketing assistant, product manager, promotions manager, etc. Now I have a small staging business that I operate independently and I work as a consultant for marketing, training, and promotions support for various organizations. It keeps me fresh and I enjoy the work... though teaching is where my heart is!
I have a BA in Business Management, and an MBA - both from Bethel University. I never felt satisfied. I just kept going through the motions. Finally, an opportunity to go back to school arose and I took it. I went back for one more year, and I now have a teaching license! I still need to write a thesis to earn my second masters degree (in teaching) and hope to be able to complete that during the next year.
"Why did you go back to school again?" is the most commonly asked question. My answer: I needed to transform my career from corporate to education. I have always loved education and I always wanted to be a teacher. However, my drive and need for income put me on a completely different path...one that never felt like my path. I am a very hard worker and did great in my job. And while the work pleased others, it left me feeling empty. I finally decided to change that. So I jumped in with both feet. I chose to get licensed in two areas...business and social studies. I dreamed of the day when I could say "I am a teacher". I can't explain how great that makes me feel... "I am a Social Studies teacher."..."I am a business education teacher." I LOVE how that sounds! And here I am...a full-fledged teacher...who just needs a classroom to complete the transformation. :)
My first lesson is one that I needed to learn myself. Follow your heart. Follow your dreams. I don't know how this story is going to turn out...I have yet to create it! What I do know is this...fulfillment doesn't come from what you get...fulfillment comes from what you give. Find a career that allows you to give the very best of you and you will find rich satisfaction and ultimate fulfillment. This is my mantra and the key to true happiness. That's how humans are really designed. For me - that comes when I can teach!
